1. Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Joel Carroll, and I’m a Course Director at Fullsail University's Game Development Final Project program. I help teach Game Art artists and Game Development programing students how to talk to each other, and help create and schedule the conceptual and art assets that will make up their 5-month Final Project demo/game.
I also dabble in comics from time to time, having contributed to volumes 1 and 4 of the Image/Random House comics anthology series Flight as well as a short Tavern Tales story for Image’s SkullKickers series. I have some webcomics that are currently on hiatus….looking forward to getting back into comics!
2. What’s your hardware setup?
I use Photoshop CS 5, I believe, on a now fairly old Dell….if I recall, it has 2 gig of RAM, with a ton of storage, but I mostly keep my files and tons and tons of reference on an external drive.
But I mostly use PS to scan, resize, and color imagery…I prefer working analog.
3. What’s your workspace look like?
While I do have an actual drafting table, I rarely use it. The cat sleeps on it. I prefer working on front of my computer, surrounded my toys and books and RPG rulesets.
4. What tools do you use to make your cartoons?
I use cheap little mechanical pencils to lay out basic shapes, and mostly do my drawings straight in ink. Inking-wise, I use 01 Sakura Micron pens for linework, and Pentel Pocket brushpen, as well as the larger squeeze-reservoir Pentel brushpen to spot black. I usually carry a Sharpie and a couple Copics for basic shading…a C2 and a C4 grey.
